USA Flag Color Meaning
Premium Sponsor
Flags vary from country to country in the shapes and colors embedded in it. One can’t help but wonder if the colors of the flags contain inconspicuous meanings other than the flag itself signifying freedom and the government in a particular country. Perhaps, the flag of United States of America, a federal republic believed to be the most powerful country by many would pique people’s interest.
Nicknamed as “Star and Stripes” or “Old Glory”, the flag is a thirteen-striped alternation of the color red and white. The thirteen stripes stand for the thirteen colonies revolting against the British government. There are fifty stars in the blue rectangle above the stripes which depict the fifty U.S. states. The flag of the US contain its national colors, the red and the white. Many people regarded the red stripe color in the flag as a symbolism of how great men of their nation fought for freedom which is suggested by the white hue. Aside from the great seal, the flag was believed to have distinguishing signification brought by tradition.
The white color signifies purity and peace. The red hue symbolizes valor, courage, enthusiasm, blood and life while the blue color indicates perseverance, justice, vigilance and respect for God. The stars in the flag according to tradition are associated with heaven and how the nation aspires to achieve it where as the stripes are the light rays from the sun. The official day the flag was made is June 14, 1777 and it was in this day that the congress of US finalized the red and white stripes alternation design of the flag with the blue rectangle containing fifty stars. The blue canton is also named as the “Union” because of its symbolism.
Widely used even in maritime, seals, and public buildings, the flag truly embodies a whole lot of implications that enable individuals to band together as citizens of a specific country. Without the common goals and symbolisms that the flag brings, it would definitely be difficult for a country to prosper and to inculcate to its citizens, the value of patriotism and nationalism that they are reminded of whenever they see the flag.

Sunday June 14th is flag day. There will be many American Legion Posts having a flag retirement ceremony. This will be done with reverence, and respect. Do not confuse this with flag burning.
ReplyThe kooks will probably try to make something bad out this, just because they can.
This question was put on here on June 9 and only 2 comments. Tha is not very good. The flag is the most enduring symbol of America. It has been spit on, burned, pissed on, torn apart by hand, ran over, defiled, reviled and hated by ignorant people that have no idea what the US flag represents. It represents the American people that will endure any pain, conquer any enemy and bear any burden. How many times does the US flag have to rise over defeated tyranny and dictators before the world wakes up and see what we stand for. I doubt that will hapeen since history is repeating itself right before out very eyes. Our leaders have not learned. They act like terroism does not exist in the world. They need to look up the definitons of misfeasance, malfeasance and nonfeasance…..
ReplyThere is nothing more beautiful than to see a huge American Flag high in the sky flowing with the wind. This is one of the most significant reminders of our Great Country – The United States of America – I live in Baton Rouge, La., and there are numerous business that fly the largest flags possible and every time I drive by one I feel the pride swell in my heart for the people who have fought, lost their lives, and continue to fight for us to be able to enjoy the many freedoms we are given in our Great Country. Everyone American should display the US Flag Proudly and with reverence.
ReplyIT NEED TO BE EVERYWHERE SO THAT AMERICANS CAN SEE IT, BECAUSE NOWAWDAYS, all I see is just one here, two there..
ReplyThe flag means freedom to me. I so appreciate all who have fought or died for our country, so we can remain free. My heart goes out to the families who have lost loved ones in times of war. My father was a WWII veteran and received numerous purple hearts and oak leaf clusters. I am so proud of him. After spending two years in the hospital after he was injured at the Island of Leyte and almost dying, he raised five children and worked every day till his retirement. The flag means so much to me and I respect it. I am so sad for the direction our country has taken in the last year and am afraid that all that the flag stands for will be for naught. I love my country and my flag and will fly it proudly especially on Flag day, like I do every day. Thank you for my freedom, I hope it lasts.
ReplyFair article but 50 stars in 1777. I think not. Otherwise. nice to see support for the flag and reference to the Republic.
ReplyPride & Freedom. June 14th is a special day to honor the flag & what it represents but it shouldn’t be just flag day & holidays when the flags come out. What happened to all the love & pride in our country after 9/11. Flags were flying everywhere. We fly ours proudly 365 days a year. It is a symbol of love & respect for all those who have served this country & died to give us the freedom we enjoy today. Please be a patriot everyday.
ReplyMy heart swells with love and pride when I see our flag waving; sometimes tears come into my eyes. I think about our freedoms, our liberty, and the many men and women who have fought and died to protect them. Every day I see our flag waving outside my window and am reminded how blessed I am to live in America, and I thank God for it. Every day.
ReplyOUR FLAG
The stars that show in the sky.
Are on the flag that we fly.
They sparkle free in the night.
To show we’ll be all right.
The red rays of the sun.
Are the red stripes we have won.
They symbolize the blood we shed.
We salute those who are dead.
The white-capped waves of the sea.
Are the stripes we fly faithfully.
They stand for love and purity.
To help us be forever free.
The blue sky, up so high.
Is on the flag we’re proud to fly.
We’ll always be true-blue.
Faithful, loyal, and trusting too.
The stars that show in the sky.
The red rays of the sun.
The white-capped waves of the sea.
The blue sky, this is what it means to me.
America is……
The place to be
America is…..
ReplyProud and free…
This is a sad Flag Day because the huge American flag at the Chevrolet dealer near my home is coming down, and the dealership is closing. I guess they didn’t make the “correct” poitical contribution. It literally makes me sick to my stomach. I’m going to go out and buy a huge diesel pick-up truck to protest this nonsense.
ReplyAgreed, I thought only 13 stars in a circle on the original flag. Otherwise, I’m glad your not afraid to take the religious symbolism out of the picture. Nice article. God Bless America.
ReplyI have many memorys of the things my Father use to share with me about his days in the Army. And the Flag was the most reveard and honored Symble in the Hearts of all his fellow Sholders. I have a ? what does the Yellow Fringe around the flag stand for? If any one can tell me would they E-mail me at dyerae@yahoo.com Thanks
ReplyI believe the first Stars and Stripes had thirteen stars arranged in a circle in the field of blue. As additional states were admitted to the Union, according to the method suggested by Thomas Jefferson (a certain minimum number of citizens, basic governmental structure and state constitution, petition for admission, etc) stars in the field of blue were periodically added to the flag to reflect the increased number of states.
The symbolism represented by the construction of our flag reflects the same careful and meaningful consideration given by the Founding Fathers and Mothers to all that they did in the establishment of our country.
Question for all: To the best of my knowledge, Congress has authorized the Flag to be flown 24/7/365 at only 2 locations – Arlington National Cemetary and at Gettysburg, PA over the grave of a young woman who was the only noncombatant person killed at the battle there in July, 1863 (a stray bullet went through two doors of her house and struck her in the back). Is anyone aware of any other locations?
ReplyI believe the flag represents the freedom we enjoy and unfortunatley have to witness (people disrespecting it), I am from a military family and to us it stands for the power and beauty of our country. It is the most loved and hated symbol in the known world. As much as I hate to see it, I believe that even when it is disrespected, people burning pissing doing anything to damage it, those actions alone demonstrate what it stands for. FREEDOM
ReplyI live in a luxury condo highrise in Chicago and asked that we put the flag in our lobby for flag holidays. Believe it or not there was lots of opposition to doing that. I found it interesting that the people who live there are citizens from many parts of the globe and some are even famous sports figures. This country has offered us the opportunity to live in a beautiful place. Many have given their lives for our freedoms and opportunities yet they fought to NOT have the flag displayed in our lobby. I won having the flag in our lobby only 8 days a year and on every one of those days I go and check to make sure its there. Well so far there has been 5 days that it was not there. Its just sad that those who have benefited so much from this country don’t care about the efforts represented in our flag that made it possible.
ReplyThe American Flag represents freedom. All through history
Replywe have fought wars, to keep this freedom. I hope people
remember who fought those wars. Soldiers from the Revelution
War to the present wars and future wars. If people hate this
country. Please leave. Go to Iran.
The American flag stands for Freedom, Honor, Constitutional Rights and moral integritgy and the right of any American CITIZEN, the pursuit of ‘an American Dream’. My familiy (Father’s line was Irish) is THREE generations of MILITARY to help fight for and keep our freedoms and rights. I am proud to be an American, love and respect my family and the American flag.
ReplyLove the flag and the country for which it stands.
I am just not sure why, with all the animosity at the time, they used the same colors as the British flag. Any study of what the colors mean needs to go back to why the British flag used those colors. We just copied them.
ReplyJuly 8, 1777 “The village of Fort Ann, [NY] just outside the Blue Line, was the site of the Battle of Fort Ann, on July 8, 1777, in which the new Stars and Stripes flag was first flown in battle.”
ReplyBreathe that Battle Banner.
