Halloween is just around the corner!

Halloween is less than five weeks away, and kids around the country are deciding what they want to be. It is a fun, festive time when kids can dress up and go out for trick or treat. However, Halloween is not just for kids, just as many adults are excited about this time of year. Parties are planned, and contests set up, it is just a fun time for all!
The history of Halloween is fascinating. Halloween began as a ritual that was performed by ancient Celtic people who lived over two thousand years ago. It was a festival that was held every year at harvest time to say goodbye to the old year and welcome the new one, which began on November first.

The festival was shrouded in darkness and fear as the Celtic people believed that this was the only night of the year that spirits could come back to live to wreak havoc on the world. It was also believed that Halloween night allowed the Druid priests to predict what would happen in the following year. Animal sacrifices were made to the spirits in hopes that the spirits would be kind to them in the pursuing year.

Costumes were made of what ever material was available and Celtic men, women and children would dance around huge bon fires to show their faith in the gods and to beg for their protection during the long winter months.

Today, adults and children still adorn elaborate costumes, however the rituals are no longer performed; they have been replace with trick or treat and elaborate parties that are fun for all.
