Diverticulitis is an extremely painful disease that forms on the walls of the colon. It is caused by fecal matter that does not pass and forms small pockets that become inflamed and infected.
Although Diverticulitis forms mostly in the large intestine, it can also form in other area’s of the body such as the small intestine, esophagus and stomach. This disease can be dormant in someone until the pockets become infected. It is important to note that mild cases of Diverticulitis can be treated with medications and dietary changes, however, severe cases may require surgery.
The symptoms of Diverticulitis are abdominal pain, fever, nausea, and changes in bowel movements.

When treating mild cases of Diverticulitis, your doctor most likely will change your diet to consist of clear liquids and possibly a low fiber diet. Be prepared for a very bland diet until your conditions improve. This will most likely consist of clear broth, gelatin, and fruit juice.
One the attack is over, your doctor will advise you on how much fiber you will need to avoid future attacks. However it is important that you add fiber back into your diet in small increments until you reach what your doctor has recommended.
A diet high in fiber can prevent Diverticulitis from developing. However it is important to remember that you need to drink plenty of water. This will replace the water that is absorbed by the fiber and in turn assist the body in passing its waste more easily. Without water, your body will become constipated and more discomfort will follow.
Making dietary changes can be difficult for some people. However, this is not to say that you have to eliminate the foods that you love to eat. By simply adding fruits and vegetables to your diet, you are increasing your fiber intake. It does not have to be a grueling process; there are so many different foods that contain fiber that you may find yourself enjoying the new foods that you have chosen.
