The IRS or Internal Revenue Service sets limits on how much one can put in a personal Roth IRA account yearly.

The IRS sets the amount that can be deposited per fiscal year. Every fiscal year, the limit is reset which means one can deposit again but only until that limit. The amount one is allowed to deposit varies with age and marital status. People over the age of 50 can deposit a bigger amount than those aged 49 years old or younger. In 2009, people in the former category could invest as much as $6000 while those in the latter category could invest $5000. For married couples, each spouse can invest as much as the limit doubling the total. Also, one is also not allowed to invest more than their compensation or modified adjusted gross income.
